Gout Treatment
There are several types
of medication used for gout treatment. This article looks at some of
the more popular ones.
...
... Doctors
normally treat gout sufferers by administering steroids and
anti-inflammatory medication, however at the time of writing there is
not much evidence to show how effective theses drugs are at treating
this condition. However it is important to get some form of treatment
because if gout is left untreated it can spread to other joints in the
body and sufferers can also develop further complications such as
permanent loss of mobility in the joints and kidney stones.
An early
sign that a gout attack may occur is if a person has too much uric acid
in their blood stream, but at this stage patients are not advised to
take any prescription medicines. Medication is only recommended if a
gout sufferer has a severe attack and in the case of other gout related
complications.
The reason
why these medicines are prescribed in only severe cases of gout is
because they have serious side effects that can cause irreversible
damage to the human body and it's organs. Hence they should only be
prescribed by a qualified practitioner in extreme conditions of gout.
The
following medicines are currently used to treat gout; Prednisone,
Indomethacin, Colchicine, and Allopurinol. We'll look at each one in a
bit more detail in the following paragraphs.
Prednisone
- This drug is an immune suppressant drug , which basically means it
lowers the bodies normal immune response, it is also used as an anti-
inflammatory agent. This drug has many side effects as a result of it
having a direct affect on the immune system, these side effects include
thinning of the bones, sodium retention, yeast growth in the mouth,
acne, osteoporosis and a negative a effect on the entire immune system.
Indomethacin
- This is a popular medication for gout treatment. It is an
anti-inflammatory drug, that does not contain steroids, which is one of
the reasons for it's popularity.
Colchicine
- This drug is used to reduce the frequency of gout attacks. If the
recommended dosage is accidentally exceeded this can cause serious
problems. These include diarrhea, queasiness and stomach spasms. In the
worst case scenario a patient may develop a bone marrow disorder.
Allopurinol
- This drug works by blocking the production of uric acid. It has
serious side effects which include toxicity of the liver, inflammation
of the blood vessels and eruptions on the skin. Patients
undergoing this form of treatment also need to have a periodic check up
where tests are carried out.
As you can
see there are various types of medication available, but they all have
undesirable side effects.
