Teen
Obesity
Obesity
is a chronic
condition that can be found all over the world, however it is currently
on the incline in developing countries, particularly in the United
States of America and in the United Kingdom. Obesity has no bias anyone
can develop the condition regardless off race, gender, ethnicity and
more importantly age. In fact there has surprisingly been an increase
in the amount of teenagers that have been diagnosed with this chronic
condition, and as the years have passed the trend has continued. In
this article we'll be looking at the topic of teen obesity.
Over
the last twenty years the percentage of obese teens has increased
threefold. It's a startling fact but nearly fifteen percent of
teenagers in America are either overweight or obese. Obesity is now
more common than ever before in teenagers and adolescents, and there
are a few reasons for that. (i) Many teenagers tend to shun healthy
meals, as they would rather eat junk food, fast food, or ready-made
food, as opposed to a home cooked meal.
(ii)
Many teenagers do not lead active lifestyles, so when they eat these
unhealthy foods they gain weight and have no chance of burning it off,
because instead of getting involved in sports they prefer to play video
games, watch T.V. or surf the Internet. None of these leisure
activities help to burn calories.
An
obese teen will have health problems, but they will be lesser
than the health problems suffered by a mature adult. However it is
highly likely that an overweight or obese teenager will become an
overweight or obese adult, and as a result they'll begin to suffer more
health problems. It is therefore important for teenagers to try and
tackle their obesity before reaching adulthood as it is easier and it
is unlikely that they are suffering from any other obesity related
conditions, which appear in later life.
Teenage
obesity is a heavy burden on the sufferers physical health, in general
it weakens it, as a result obese teenagers become lethargic and stay
away from from outdoor activities.
Obese
teenagers also tend to have no social life and they suffer from
loneliness and unhappiness. They tend not to have any friends and find
it difficult to interact with new people. Most obese teenagers suffer
from stress due to their weight problem, which can lead to mental
illness. Research has also shown that obese teenagers are bullied in a
lot of cases, however sometimes they are the perpetrators, this could
lead to mental problems in later life.
It
is highly recommended that overweight and obese teenagers speak to
their doctor to find out how they can reduce their weight.
