Morbid
Obesity
When obesity gets to
the stage where it starts to increase the chance of the sufferer
developing one or more obesity related health conditions or diseases it
is given the name morbid obesity. These conditions and serious diseases
which may develop as a result of morbid obesity can result in physical
disability and eventually death.
Morbid obesity related conditions and illnesses are medically known as
co-morbidities. Morbid obesity is a chronic disease, which means it
develops slowly over a period of time.
Morbid
obesity is also known as "clinically severe obesity", it is also called
"class 3 obesity". Morbid obesity is the worse type of obesity there
is, it means a person has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 40kg/m2
of higher. Having a BMI of this amount is dangerous health wise. A
morbidly obese person is more likely to suffer from musco-skeletal
disorders, respiratory problems, certain forms of cancer, diabetes,
hypertension and cardiovascular disease amongst other potentially
deadly conditions.
People
who suffer from morbid obesity are more likely to die prematurely, they
also have a significantly increased risk of death from diabetes, heart
attacks or from obesity when it gets to a stage where it can no longer
be treated (also known as end stage obesity).
There
are various causes of morbid obesity, these causes are the same as the
causes of obesity, which is the stage before morbid obesity. The causes
of obesity include family genetic history, degree of physical activity,
cultural factors, eating habits since childhood and lifestyle although
there are other factors.
As
you can see there are several factors that contribute to morbid obesity
but at this point in time experts cannot pinpoint how much influence
each individual factor has on morbid obesity.
Treatment
for this condition usually involves a combination of liquid or a diet
that is very low in calories, weight loss medication and counseling.
Patients that suffer from co-morbidities may also qualify for surgery
such as stomach bypass or gastric surgery.
People
that are morbidly obese tend not to be able to control their weight on
their own, they require surgery to help them. Morbid obesity affects
the sufferers mobility and quality of life, and if the excess weight is
not shifted they can die up to 20 years prematurely, if you are
suffering from this condition, or obesity it is recommended you speak
to your doctor urgently.
