Diabetes and
Obesity
Obesity
is linked to various other conditions and diseases, one of the the
conditions that has a particularly strong link to obesity is type two
diabetes. It has been noted that 8 out of 10 type two diabetes
sufferers are overweight or obese, and this is not the only link the
two conditions have. Type to diabetes has been on the incline for the
last 3 decades, and this rise is similar to the rise of obesity which
has also been on the increase over the last 3 decades.
Research
has been undertaken and the results suggest that the onset of type two
diabetes can be significantly delayed if a healthy lifestyle plan is
included. Which means the millions of people in America and all over
the world that are in the high risk group for type two diabetes can
lower the risk of becoming sufferers of type two diabetes, by simply
following a diet and exercise plan. These finding were discovered
during a large scale clinical trial involving the Indiana University
and 26 other American medical centers.
The
people selected to take part in this clinical trial were a sample of
the population who were likely to develop diabetes. These people were
generally overweight and had a condition known as impaired glucose
intolerance which is linked to type two diabetes. Other people that
were selected to take part in this trial involved close blood relatives
of people with type two diabetes, women who suffer from gestational
diabetes and individuals aged 60 or over.
Participants
were required to maintain active physical exercise for 30 minutes a
day. The results of the clinical trials showed that regular exercise
could reduce the chance of developing type two diabetes by just under
60%
Another
recent study that shows a link between obesity and type two diabetes,
involves the a certain class of drugs known as Thiazolidinedioines
(TZD's). TZD's can help the body fight against diabetes. A group of
scientists at the University of Pennsylvania school of medicine set out
to discover why TZD's help to fight diabetes. As a result of this study
scientists found a clear link between type two diabetes and obesity.
For
purposes of clarification it is important to understand that being
obese or overweight does not cause type two diabetes. However, it does
increase the chances of an individual developing this condition. It is
advisable that obese and overweight people try to lead a more active
lifestyle and follow a healthy nutrition plan in order to reduce the
risk of developing type two diabetes.
